Why are the small parks found within The City of Edmonton so special? I was asked to pick a natural area of the city and describe in a few paragraphs why I think this area is so special to me, but this park is an example of why all small parks in the city of Edmonton are something to get excited about. Not only do most of these parks contain objects of usefulness; picnic tables, small playgrounds, a sandbox, workout equipment; they also provide much needed shade for a nap in the middle of a hot summer day (thanks to the trees and shrubs), a wildlife habitat (squirrels, birds, insects, rabbits), a great place to practice snow shoeing or cross country skiing in the winter, a quiet picnic site for a romantic getaway, or a place to run around for kids, adults and pets. The City of Edmonton has hundreds of these little 3 or 4 property size parks. They are usually not part of the river valley system and don’t contain a water source, but are beautiful just the same. These parks represent a chance for people to go out and enjoy nature without having to drive anywhere to get it. Although it would be interesting to do a research study on how much these parks are used, especially by the folks who live in apartment complexes or multifamily homes nearby, in the meantime let’s go out there and have fun. Take a walk out of your home and look around, you are sure to find one of these little gems in your neighborhood.
